The arrival of Sonam Lhosar in Helambu, Sindhupalchowk, is marked by vibrant festivities—crispy and delicious ‘Kapsye’, rich and oily ‘Baver’, the sound of firecrackers, beautifully decorated houses, joyful faces, and new ‘Tarcho’ and ‘Lungdar’ fluttering in front of homes. The chilly winter air adds to the festive atmosphere as the Hyolmo people welcome the New Year with enthusiasm and devotion.
Lhosar, derived from the Hyolmo words ‘Lho’ meaning year and ‘Sar’ meaning new, is an annual celebration of renewal and prosperity. In Nepal, the Buddhist community observes three different Lhosars—Tamu Lhosar in December/January, Sonam Lhosar in January/February, and Gyalpo Lhosar in February/March. Among these, Sonam Lhosar holds special significance for the Hyolmo people of Helambu, who celebrate it with grandeur and deep cultural pride.
The word ‘Sonam’ symbolizes ‘fortune,’ and this year, the 2052th Sonam Lhosar marks the transition from the Dragon Year to the Snake Year. Following the Buddhist Lunar Calendar, Sonam Lhosar begins on the new moon day of the Nepali month of Magh and is observed for 15 days, concluding on the full moon day.
Throughout the celebrations, families gather to offer prayers at monasteries, seeking blessings for prosperity and well-being. Traditional Hyolmo cuisine is prepared and shared, while cultural performances, including masked dances and folk songs, add to the festive spirit. Homes are adorned with colorful prayer flags, and elders bestow blessings upon the younger generation. The festival fosters a strong sense of community, as people come together to honor their heritage and welcome the new year with hope and joy.
Sonam Lhosar in Helambu is more than just a New Year celebration—it is a time of spiritual reflection, cultural preservation, and communal harmony, making it one of the most cherished occasions in the Hyolmo calendar.
